Etching in metal with Brother stencil tape

The process of etching in metal is called electrolysis, and it can be used on most metals as well as most chrome-plated surfaces. If you need to mark metal objects with name, QR code, barcode, item number etc., it can be done quickly and easily. All you need is a label made of Brother stencil tape, an electrolysis machine with an electrolysis pen, an electrolysis fluid (depending on the type of metal) and a neutralizing fluid. Both fluids are harmless and approved to be used with food.

Before beginning the process of etching your text or code into the metal that you want to mark, you need to design and print a label on Brother stencil tape. The tape is available in 18, 24 or 36mm width, so there are many options for producing a unique label in exactly the length and width that suits the purpose. Brother stencil tape is suitable for all kinds of marking jobs, and especially when there is a need for diverse marking in a limited number.

When the label is ready, wet the metal with an electrolysis liquid, apply the label, and wet again with the same liquid. Then run the electrolysis pen connected to the electrolysis machine over the label several times, so that you are sure that the etching has passed through the label as it should. Please note that if you drag the pen over the metal outside the label, this metal will also take on color, so it’s important that it does not protrude beyond the edge of the label. Therefore, it is a good idea to use a label that is as wide as possible. If needed, each label can be used 5 to 10 times.

The electrolysis process is stopped by applying a neutralizing liquid. The etching is then completed, and the metal can be wiped dry. If you don’t do this, the process will continue, and you may risk a somewhat darker result than what you wanted.

The device is available with a timer function, and if you use it combined with a wide electrolysis pen, you ensure uniform results. This is especially important when you must mark several items and want them to appear the same.
