Brother Solutions Interface: a world of possibilities

Imagine the potential of creating new capabilities for scanners, printers or MFCs used by your customers, to help them gain more value from their devices.

Brother Solutions Interface (BSI) offers developers exactly that opportunity by providing the means to create custom solutions that fit with niche requirements of end users.

Whether you’re a third party developer, in-house development team or channel partner, BSI opens up a new world of possibilities for Brother devices.

BSI’s broader scope

BSI is an open interface technology that enables server-based applications to make Brother devices perform custom actions. These applications are controlled at the device, which then communicates with the server to activate specific functions.

The key difference between the capabilities within the firmware of Brother devices and those enabled by BSI is scope.

For example, Web Connect is a Brother-developed capability on a device’s firmware that enables scanning to selected cloud storage services supported by Brother, including Google Drive or OneDrive® for Business.

In contrast, BSI provides developers with the ability to build similar solutions for other services that aren’t supported by Brother, such as accountancy software or unsupported document management systems.

Easy to use

One of the key benefits of BSI is ease of use, especially when compared with competitor offerings. For example, BSI applications can dynamically respond to different sizes of screen on devices, meaning no additional coding is needed.

In addition, a wide range of Brother devices are supported – from basic scanners, mono and colour laser machines to inkjet devices – and BSI provides guaranteed backwards and forwards compatibility for old and upcoming devices.

We’re developing new features for BSI all the time, but there are three new capabilities that have been added over the past year that should help to inspire some exciting new applications:

The BSI big three

  • Scan to your own cloud service – developers can use BSI to create solutions that scan and send documents directly into any cloud service without the need for a VPN.

  • Print from your own cloud services – developers can use BSI to create solutions that print documents directly into a specific cloud service without a VPN, including accounting, document management and forms.

  • Use a third party barcode scanner – developers can now develop applications that connect a barcode scanner to create sophisticated workflow solutions using barcode data for authorisation, control or metadata.
